Becky Z says:RAF Alconbury/ RAF Molesworth England. (currently stationed there) RAF Alconbury is one of 3 bases in the Tri base area ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú the other 2 being RAF Molesworth and RAF Upwood. Alconbury is located 3 miles northeast of the town of Huntingdon in the county of Cambridgeshire and is around 60 miles north of London. Most of the base facilities are on RAF Alconbury. You will find enlisted base housing (small amount with long waiting list) Commissary BX schools lodging Post Offices (British and US) CDC movie theater and sports center on Alconbury. RAF Molesworth is mainly work buildings and is around 20 mins from Alconbury. PETS - There are strict restrictions about bringing your pets into England. As soon as you get notification of your assignment you should contact your local vet to start the process. There is only 1 pet room at lodging but there are many kennels and catteries surrounding the base. There is a restriction of 2 pets on base housing. Some things to note about England ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú ?¢‚Ǩ¬¢ We drive on the other side of the road ?¢‚Ǩ¬¢ You have to pay TV tax ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú 145 pounds per year (it is reimbursable from finance) ?¢‚Ǩ¬¢ If you have a US car you will need to get a light conversion done before you can get your MOT (inspection). Once you have your MOT you go to Pass & ID who will help you fill out the paperwork to send off in order to get your Road Tax Disc and then order your new license plates. ?¢‚Ǩ¬¢ We have 220 volt power over here ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú your 110v US appliances will not work over here unless you use a transformer. ?¢‚Ǩ¬¢ Our currency is Great British Pounds. ?¢‚Ǩ¬¢ CELL PHONES ?¢‚Ǩ‚Äú If you want to get a British Cell phone contract you will first need to set up a pounds account on base (the only place you can get one is Community Bank). You can then go to the Vodafone store in the nearest town with your bank details and a set of orders to get a cell phone. ?¢‚Ǩ¬¢ There is a lot to do in the surrounding areas. Cambridge and Peterborough are large cities with beautiful scenery good night life and shopping. VISAS - As a command sponsored family member you will need to apply for a visa to live in the country. You will need to contact the British embassy/Consulate to start the process. The AD member does not need a visa to enter the country - just orders & ID. The 2 banks on RAF Alconbury are Keesler Federal Credit Union and Community Bank.
